Pope Leo XIV Praises Italian Catholic Initiatives Supporting Vulnerable Communities
Pope Leo XIV has expressed appreciation for Catholic organizations in Italy that work to support vulnerable communities and strengthen social cohesion. During a meeting at the Vatican with representatives of the Catholic Foundation and the Catholic Insurance Society the Pope highlighted the importance of Catholic initiatives that combine faith with social responsibility. Addressing the delegation the Pontiff thanked the organizations for their commitment to promoting an active presence of Catholics within Italian society and for their continued efforts to assist families individuals and communities facing hardship and marginalization.
The Pope noted that the work carried out by these institutions reflects a long tradition within the Catholic social movement in Italy. He encouraged participants to study the history of Catholic initiatives that have shaped the country’s social and economic development. According to Pope Leo XIV the experiences of past generations of Catholic leaders provide valuable inspiration for addressing modern social challenges. By remembering how earlier believers combined their faith with practical action for justice and solidarity the Church can continue developing initiatives that respond effectively to the needs of contemporary society.
In his remarks the Pope recalled how Catholic social organizations first emerged in response to the teachings of Pope Leo XIII particularly those expressed in the encyclical Rerum novarum. That historic document encouraged Catholics to organize economic and social initiatives that would defend workers and respond to the social question created by industrialization. Inspired by these teachings Catholic leaders established cooperatives rural banks and mutual aid societies that helped communities confront economic insecurity. These initiatives demonstrated how faith based action could contribute to building a more just and supportive society.
Pope Leo XIV also referred to the origins of the Catholic Insurance Society which was founded in Verona in 1896 by priests and lay Catholics committed to cooperative principles. The organization gradually expanded while maintaining its mission of supporting families and communities during times of uncertainty. According to the Pope its development paralleled the transformation of Italian society and helped many people overcome difficult periods including the economic and social consequences of the two World Wars. The institution remains an example of how Catholic social values can influence economic life in ways that promote solidarity.
The Pope further highlighted the role of the Catholic Foundation which was established two decades ago in response to new social challenges emerging in modern society. Drawing inspiration from earlier Catholic social movements the foundation focuses on supporting individuals and communities experiencing economic and social fragility. Through partnerships with associations social enterprises religious institutions and charitable initiatives the organization contributes to strengthening social cohesion and assisting people facing exclusion or poverty.
Pope Leo XIV encouraged the representatives to continue developing initiatives that promote both social responsibility and the formation of younger generations. Educational cultural and participatory programs he said play a vital role in helping young people understand the values of solidarity and service. By investing in youth formation Catholic institutions can ensure that future generations remain committed to building communities grounded in justice compassion and respect for human dignity.
Concluding the meeting the Pope praised the work carried out by the organizations but also urged them to remain faithful to the evangelical spirit that inspires their mission. He emphasized the importance of coherence between their goals and the methods they use to achieve them. Pope Leo XIV expressed hope that the example and teachings of Blessed Giuseppe Toniolo would continue to guide their efforts as they seek to support vulnerable people and strengthen the bonds of solidarity within Italian society.
