Catholic bishops in Angola have begun preparing the country for the anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV by issuing a pastoral letter and approving an official prayer intended to guide the faithful during the period leading up to the papal trip. The announcement followed the first plenary assembly of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tome held in the capital city of Luanda. During the gathering bishops spent several days reflecting on the pastoral needs of the Church and the broader social situation in the country. Church leaders described the upcoming papal visit as a moment of spiritual renewal and national unity for Angola.

The bishops encouraged Catholics and all people of goodwill across the country to participate actively in the celebrations planned for the papal visit. Major events are expected to take place in Kilamba Muxima and Saurimo where large gatherings of the faithful are anticipated. According to Church representatives the visit is expected to strengthen the Catholic community and highlight the Church’s role in promoting peace social development and national reconciliation. As part of the preparation process the bishops also announced the relaunch of the official website of the Episcopal Conference which will serve as the main platform for information updates and communication about the apostolic visit.

During their plenary discussions the bishops also addressed several pressing social challenges facing the country. Church leaders expressed concern over increasing levels of poverty hunger and social instability affecting many communities. They called on national authorities to focus greater attention on programs that support small scale family farming and agricultural self sufficiency. According to the bishops encouraging rural development and food production could help reduce unemployment and improve living conditions in rural areas. They emphasized that strengthening local agriculture remains essential for long term economic stability and food security.

Education was another major concern raised during the assembly. The bishops warned that a growing number of children and young people remain outside the formal education system while dropout rates continue to increase in several regions. In particular they highlighted problems caused by teacher shortages and absenteeism in rural communities which often leaves students without consistent access to schooling. Church leaders stressed that reforming and strengthening the national education system must become a priority in order to prevent rising illiteracy and provide young people with opportunities for personal and professional development.

Environmental protection was also discussed during the meeting as bishops raised alarm over increasing levels of deforestation across parts of Angola. They warned that the destruction of forests poses serious risks to biodiversity natural resources and the long term wellbeing of communities that depend on the environment for their livelihoods. The bishops called for stronger cooperation between government institutions civil society organizations and local communities to promote responsible stewardship of the country’s natural resources. Church leaders said protecting the environment remains an important responsibility for ensuring sustainable development and safeguarding the future of the nation.
