Archbishop Amani Urges Priests to Live Their Calling Fully at Arusha Chrism Mass
Archbishop Isaac Amani of Arusha has called on priests to remain faithful to their sacred vocation, urging them to use their anointed hands to bless, heal and sanctify the faithful during this year’s Chrism Mass. Speaking at St Theresa Cathedral, he emphasized that the priesthood is not only a role of leadership but a mission rooted in service, prayer and reconciliation. He reminded clergy that their responsibility goes beyond words, encouraging them to embody the teachings they preach through their daily lives and pastoral conduct within their communities.
Addressing a gathering that included priests, religious leaders and lay faithful, the Archbishop highlighted the spiritual depth of the priestly calling. He stressed that priests are most credible when their actions align with their message, particularly in fostering unity and maintaining a life of prayer. He also pointed to the importance of harmony within parish communities, noting that priests serve as both spiritual guides and examples of Christian living. The message reinforced the idea that priestly leadership must be grounded in authenticity and consistent witness.
The Archbishop also turned his attention to the wider Church, reminding the faithful of their own participation in the mission of Christ through baptism. He explained that all Christians share in what is known as the common priesthood, allowing them to contribute to the spiritual life of the Church through prayer, service and daily commitment. While distinct from ordained ministry, this shared responsibility plays a vital role in strengthening the Church’s mission and connecting faith with everyday life across communities.
A key focus of the Chrism Mass was the blessing of the three holy oils used throughout the liturgical year, including the Chrism, the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick. Archbishop Amani explained their significance, particularly highlighting the role of the Oil of the Sick in offering spiritual strength and grace to those facing illness and suffering. He encouraged believers to embrace the sacrament of anointing, describing it as a source of comfort and faith during difficult times, while reaffirming the central role of priests in administering these sacred rites.
During the ceremony, priests renewed their commitments, reaffirming their dedication to serving Christ and the Church. The Archbishop called on the faithful to support their clergy through prayer and encouragement, recognizing the challenges they face in fulfilling their mission. He also encouraged individuals to deepen their own spiritual lives through scripture, gatherings and ongoing formation. Looking ahead, he invited the community to remain united as the archdiocese prepares to inaugurate a new cathedral later in 2026, marking an important milestone after years of development.
