The Catholic Church in Ghana has announced a new annual Mass dedicated to the beatification cause of Cardinal Peter Porekuu Dery, a respected church leader remembered for his pastoral service and contributions to the growth of Catholicism in the country. The directive was issued by the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference and calls on priests across the nation to celebrate Holy Mass every year on March 7 in prayerful support of the process seeking his recognition as a saint. Church leaders are encouraging the faithful to participate spiritually in the initiative by asking God to grant the grace needed for his beatification.

The bishops described the annual Mass as an important step in keeping alive the memory and spiritual legacy of Cardinal Dery, whose ministry left a lasting impact on the Church in Ghana. The instruction invites Catholic communities to unite in prayer while reflecting on the life and virtues of the late cardinal. Church leaders believe that such moments of collective prayer can strengthen awareness of his example of faith and service while encouraging believers to deepen their commitment to Christian values. The initiative also highlights the broader importance of recognizing African church figures whose lives have shaped Catholic communities through leadership, education, and pastoral care.

The formal process seeking Cardinal Dery’s beatification began in June 2013 when the Church in Ghana announced plans to open the cause during a memorial Mass held in Tamale. Shortly afterward a formal request was submitted to the Vatican authority responsible for examining causes of sainthood. The request was reviewed and in July of the same year the Vatican issued the required approval allowing the investigation into his life and virtues to begin. With this step he was granted the title Servant of God, which marks the first official stage in the Catholic Church’s path toward sainthood.

The diocesan phase of the investigation opened in May 2015 in the Archdiocese of Tamale. During this stage Church officials gathered historical records, personal writings, and testimonies from people who knew Cardinal Dery during his lifetime. Investigators examined his pastoral work, leadership, and reputation for holiness to determine whether he lived a life of heroic virtue. By mid 2016 the inquiry had already collected testimony from forty five witnesses across several dioceses including Tamale, Damongo, Yendi, Navrongo Bolgatanga, and Wa. If the Vatican later confirms the heroic virtue of the candidate he may be declared Venerable, bringing the cause one step closer to beatification.

Cardinal Peter Porekuu Dery remains one of the most significant figures in the history of the Catholic Church in northern Ghana. Born on May 10 1918 near Nandom in the Upper West Region, he was ordained a priest in February 1951 and became the first indigenous priest from that region. His ministry played a central role in the development of Catholic institutions across northern Ghana. When the Diocese of Wa was established in 1959 he was appointed its first bishop, and he later introduced liturgical inculturation that allowed local cultural traditions to be integrated into Catholic worship.

Throughout his decades of leadership Cardinal Dery worked to strengthen Catholic education and pastoral formation by establishing schools and a minor seminary. In 1972 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Tamale while continuing to serve the Diocese of Wa. Two years later he was formally named bishop of Tamale and later became its first archbishop when the diocese was elevated to an archdiocese in 1977. After many years of service he retired as Archbishop of Tamale in 1994 but remained an important spiritual figure in the region.

His influence continued to be recognized within the global Church when he was created cardinal during a consistory held in March 2006. Cardinal Dery passed away in Tamale on March 6 2008 at the age of eighty nine. Today many Catholics in Ghana remember him for his humility, dedication to pastoral ministry, and commitment to strengthening the Church in local communities. The newly announced annual Mass seeks to honor that legacy while encouraging ongoing prayer for the advancement of his cause toward beatification.
