Lebanon’s Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops Urge Dialogue as Regional Violence Intensifies

Amid rising tensions and continued violence across the Middle East, the Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon has issued a strong appeal calling for peace, dialogue, and renewed international efforts to prevent further escalation. In a statement released on March 5, Church leaders expressed deep concern about the growing instability affecting Lebanon and the wider region, warning that continued conflict could lead to severe humanitarian and political consequences.

The bishops and patriarchs emphasized that the ongoing cycle of violence threatens not only regional stability but also the dignity and safety of ordinary people. Their message focused particularly on civilians who continue to endure the consequences of conflict, including the displacement of families and increasing hardship for communities caught in the midst of hostilities.

According to the Church leaders, the escalation of violence risks undermining the fundamental values that sustain societies. They warned that continued confrontations damage the dignity of the human person and weaken the foundations of justice, peace, and stability. The bishops stressed that human dignity must remain at the center of political and social decisions, especially during times of crisis.

In their appeal, the bishops also recalled the moral guidance offered by Pope Leo, who emphasized that violence can never be the right solution. They repeated the Pope’s message that choosing the good and pursuing peace should always remain the guiding principle for individuals and nations alike. The Church leaders described peace not as a temporary or optional goal but as a shared human responsibility that requires commitment from all sides.

For this reason, the Assembly urged an immediate end to the current spiral of violence and called for a return to meaningful dialogue and responsible diplomatic engagement. They highlighted the importance of international cooperation and negotiation efforts aimed at protecting human life and restoring stability in the region.

The statement also addressed Lebanon’s internal political situation. Describing the country as a land of message and coexistence, the bishops called on national leaders to fully assume their responsibilities toward preserving unity and strengthening civil peace. They emphasized that Lebanon’s political authorities must work together to safeguard stability and ensure that divisions do not deepen during a period of regional uncertainty.

At the same time, the Church leaders encouraged all political actors and communities within Lebanon to support the institutions of the state. They reaffirmed the principle that weapons must remain under the authority of the state in order to preserve sovereignty and maintain national order. According to the bishops, this principle is essential for protecting Lebanon’s independence and preventing instability that could endanger the country’s future.

Turning their attention to the international community, the Assembly called on global institutions to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and seeking fair solutions to ongoing conflicts. They stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved when justice, human dignity, and the rights of all peoples are respected.

The bishops also addressed the faithful and people of goodwill throughout the region, encouraging solidarity with those affected by the conflict. They urged communities to support displaced families and assist those who remain in villages and towns impacted by the violence. Hospitality toward those forced to leave their homes, they reminded believers, reflects a core message of the Gospel.
