Monaco Awaits Historic Visit of Pope Leo XIV with Joy and Anticipation
The Principality of Monaco is preparing to welcome Pope Leo XIV in what will be the first papal visit in its history. Civil and ecclesiastical authorities have expressed deep joy and expectation ahead of the Apostolic Journey scheduled for Saturday, March 28, the eve of Palm Sunday.
The announcement, confirmed by both the Prince’s Palace and the Archdiocese of Monaco, follows an invitation extended by Prince Albert II during a private audience at the Vatican earlier this year. The visit will mark a significant moment for the small Mediterranean state, often referred to as the Rock, and for its longstanding relationship with the Holy See.
Monaco and the Vatican share centuries of historical and spiritual ties. The Grimaldi dynasty, which has ruled Monaco since 1297, has maintained a close connection with the Successors of Peter. Official diplomatic relations between the two states were formally established in 1887, when Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Monaco and placed it directly under the authority of the Holy See.
In 2027, the Archdiocese of Monaco will commemorate 140 years since the creation of the diocese, along with the 780th anniversary of the establishment of the first parish in the Principality. Church leaders view Pope Leo XIV’s visit as a meaningful prelude to these milestones, strengthening a relationship rooted in faith and shared history.
Catholicism remains the state religion of Monaco, though freedom of worship is guaranteed by the 1962 constitution. The Archdiocese describes the local Church as a central element of Monegasque life, active in pastoral, social, and cultural initiatives.
