Pope Leo XIV Calls for Immediate Ceasefire Four Years After War in Ukraine Began

Marking four years since the start of the war against Ukraine, Pope Leo XIV renewed a forceful appeal for peace following the Angelus prayer, urging an immediate ceasefire and a halt to bombings. Speaking from the Apostolic Palace window, the Pope stressed that peace is urgently needed and must be supported by responsible decisions at every level.

Let the weapons fall silent and let the bombings cease, he said, calling for dialogue to be strengthened to pave the way toward a just and lasting peace. Recalling the immense suffering caused by the conflict, he described war as a wound inflicted upon the entire human family, leaving behind death, devastation and long lasting pain that marks generations.

The Pope reflected on the many victims, shattered families and widespread destruction that have characterized the conflict since its escalation four years ago. He noted that the war continues to unfold before the eyes of the world and emphasized that peace cannot be postponed. It is not merely an aspiration, he said, but an urgent necessity that must find a place in human hearts and translate into concrete action.

Inviting the faithful to unite in prayer, Pope Leo XIV asked for spiritual solidarity with the people of Ukraine and with all those suffering due to armed conflicts across the globe. He expressed hope that the long awaited gift of peace would shine upon the world and relieve those enduring fear and uncertainty.

Since the beginning of his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV has consistently described the war as senseless and has called for authentic dialogue between the parties involved. He has repeatedly urged the release of prisoners and the return of children separated from their families as essential humanitarian steps. In previous addresses, including his Christmas Urbi et Orbi message, he highlighted the suffering of civilians, particularly during harsh winter months when attacks on energy infrastructure worsen living conditions.

The Holy See has continued to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine through the Office of the Papal Almoner. Pope Leo XIV has also met with Ukrainian pilgrims and representatives of organizations assisting war victims, as well as with family members of soldiers and displaced persons. During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last December, he reiterated the Vatican’s willingness to facilitate dialogue and host negotiations if requested.

While acknowledging the complexity of the geopolitical situation, the Pope has maintained that sincere and respectful dialogue remains the only viable path forward. His appeal on the fourth anniversary of the war underscored the moral dimension of the crisis, reminding the international community that every conflict carries consequences that extend far beyond national borders and deeply affect the human family as a whole.
