Pope Leo XIV Urges Law Enforcement to Rediscover the Core of the Christian Message
Pope Leo XIV has called on members of Italy’s Carabinieri to rediscover the essential core of the Christian message and to carry out their responsibilities with upright consciences rooted in faith and moral integrity. The remarks came during a meeting at the Vatican with law enforcement officers serving in Rome and throughout the surrounding province.
Greeting the delegation, the Pope expressed gratitude for their commitment to maintaining order and security, especially during the Jubilee Year, which placed increased demands on public services in the Eternal City. He acknowledged that the presence of pilgrims from around the world had been a source of spiritual encouragement for residents of Rome and thanked the Carabinieri for ensuring that such gatherings could take place safely.
Reflecting on the history of Christianity in Rome, Pope Leo recalled how the Gospel first spread in diverse settings, including within the ranks of the military. He described the Christian message as a new way of living and thinking, centered on a God of love, mercy and forgiveness, and on a vision of fraternity that transcends social and ethnic divisions. This transformation, he noted, did not occur through force or political upheaval but through a gradual change of hearts and consciences.
The Carabinieri, as Italy’s national gendarmerie and one of the branches of the armed forces, are familiar with hierarchy, command and obedience. Pope Leo observed that the Gospel has historically influenced civilizations not by dismantling structures violently but by shaping principles, behavior and institutions from within. Its impact has been marked by respect for human life, recognition of the dignity of every person and worship directed to God alone.
Turning to the present day, the Pope asked whether such a transformation can still take place in modern Rome and in contemporary society. He answered affirmatively, pointing to the enduring relevance of the Second Vatican Council and the consistent witness of the Church’s teaching. He encouraged the officers to rediscover the spirit of the early Church and to embody it within a world that is more complex and often fragmented.
Quoting the Letter to the Hebrews, Pope Leo reminded them that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He emphasized that Christian faith provides continuity and stability amid social change. For law enforcement officers, this means carrying out their duties with an upright conscience, faithful both to the regulations of their corps and to the Gospel that guides their intentions and actions with charity.
Concluding his address, the Pope entrusted the Carabinieri to the protection of Mary under the title Virgo Fidelis and offered his blessing upon them, their families and their service. His message underscored that public duty and Christian discipleship are not separate paths but can converge in a life shaped by responsibility, justice and love.
