Catholic bishops of the Solomon Islands gathered at the Holy Name of Mary Seminary for their first meeting of 2026, combining pastoral discussions with an encounter with seminarians preparing for priesthood. The meeting took place on March 10 and brought together Archbishop Christopher Cardone of Honiara, Bishop Peter Houhou of Gizo, and Bishop Jacob Aba of Auki. The bishops used the occasion to reflect on pastoral priorities for the year ahead while also strengthening ties with the seminary community responsible for forming future priests of the local Church. Their visit concluded with a Eucharistic celebration that highlighted the importance of priestly vocation and formation.

During their time at the seminary the bishops held discussions among themselves regarding pastoral challenges facing their dioceses and the broader mission of the Church in the Solomon Islands. They also met with the rector, seminary lecturers and students who are currently in formation. Church leaders emphasized the value of close collaboration between bishops and formators in guiding seminarians along their spiritual journey. The gathering provided an opportunity to assess how the seminary continues to prepare candidates for ministry while responding to the needs of Catholic communities spread across the islands.

A central moment of the visit was the celebration of Mass where five seminarians in their spiritual year received the cassock, an important step in their path toward priesthood. Bishop Jacob Aba presided at the liturgy with Archbishop Cardone and Bishop Houhou concelebrating alongside other priests serving at the seminary. During the ceremony the seminarians formally received the traditional clerical garment that symbolizes their commitment to a life dedicated to God and the service of the Church. The event was attended by fellow seminarians formators and members of the local Catholic community.

In his homily Bishop Aba spoke directly to the seminarians about the meaning of priestly vocation. He reminded them that the priesthood is not a path to authority or personal status but a calling rooted in service and dedication to the spiritual well being of others. According to the bishop the Church needs priests who live authentically and bring the presence of Christ to the faithful through humility compassion and faith. He encouraged the seminarians to view their years of formation not as preparation for a title but as an opportunity to grow in holiness and deepen their relationship with God.

The bishop also reflected on the significance of the cassock received by the seminarians. He explained that the garment is more than a symbol of clerical identity and should be understood as a visible commitment to the life they are choosing. Bishop Aba urged the students to see the cassock as a reminder of their responsibility to live faithfully according to their vocation. He emphasized that priestly life must be shaped by ongoing conversion and love for God rather than by external recognition or public visibility.

The gathering also highlighted the broader role of priestly formation within the mission of the Church in the Solomon Islands. Bishops and seminary leaders discussed the importance of preparing priests who are ready to serve communities often spread across remote islands and diverse cultural contexts. Formation programs aim to equip future priests with both spiritual maturity and pastoral sensitivity so they can respond to the needs of the faithful and contribute to the growth of the Church across the region.

As the bishops concluded their meeting they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening priestly formation and supporting seminarians as they prepare for ministry. The discussions also addressed pastoral initiatives planned for the coming year including efforts to deepen evangelization and strengthen parish life in the dioceses of Honiara Gizo and Auki. By gathering with seminarians and formators the bishops sought to encourage a new generation of priests dedicated to serving the Church with humility faith and missionary spirit.
