Ugandan Bishops Prepare for Ad Limina Visit to Meet Pope Leo XIV in Rome
The Catholic bishops of Uganda are preparing to travel to Rome for the traditional ad limina apostolorum visit, a significant event that strengthens the relationship between local churches and the Holy See. The pilgrimage will begin on March 15 and will bring together members of the Uganda Episcopal Conference for several days of meetings, prayer and reflection. During the visit the bishops will present reports on the pastoral life of their dioceses and share the concerns of the faithful they serve. The journey will also mark the first time Ugandan bishops meet Pope Leo XIV together since his election to the papacy.
Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira Diocese, who serves as Vice Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, explained that the bishops will represent the entire Catholic community of Uganda during the pilgrimage. He said the delegation will carry the hopes and challenges of their dioceses to Rome while engaging with the leadership of the universal Church. According to Bishop Wanok the visit will provide an opportunity to present the pastoral realities of Lira Diocese and other regions of the country to the Pope. Church leaders view the gathering as an important moment to strengthen communication between the Vatican and the local Church.
During their stay in Rome the Ugandan bishops will also hold discussions with several dicasteries of the Holy See that oversee different areas of Catholic life and governance. These meetings allow bishops to address pastoral issues and share insights about the social and spiritual conditions facing their dioceses. The ad limina visit normally takes place every five years and requires diocesan bishops from around the world to meet the Pope and report on the situation of the Church in their territories. Through these encounters the Vatican maintains a close understanding of the realities experienced by Catholic communities worldwide.
Prayer and spiritual reflection remain central to the pilgrimage. Bishop Wanok told the faithful of Lira Diocese that the bishops will celebrate Mass at the tombs of the Apostles Peter and Paul, which are among the most sacred sites in the Catholic tradition. These moments of prayer are intended to strengthen the spiritual unity between local churches and the universal mission of the Church. The bishop said he would carry the intentions of the people of Lira in his prayers and present before God the hopes and struggles of families who continue to sustain the faith in the region.
Church leaders say the ad limina visit is not only an administrative obligation but also a time of renewal for bishops. It allows them to reflect on their responsibilities as shepherds and to seek guidance from the Pope who is regarded as the successor of Saint Peter. Bishop Wanok encouraged Catholics across Uganda to accompany the bishops through prayer during the pilgrimage. He entrusted the journey to the intercession of Saint Peter Saint Paul and the Blessed Virgin Mary, expressing hope that the visit will strengthen the faith of communities throughout the country.
