Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Malabo, marking the beginning of the final leg of his 11 day Apostolic Journey across Africa, with Equatorial Guinea becoming the last destination of his multi nation pastoral visit. The arrival took place at 11:31 AM local time, following his departure from Angola earlier the same morning, where he concluded a three day stay that included visits to Luanda, Muxima and Saurimo. The visit highlights the Vatican’s continued engagement with African nations through diplomacy, faith outreach and social dialogue.

The Holy Father’s schedule in Equatorial Guinea is set to include a series of high level meetings and pastoral engagements focused on government leaders, civil society representatives and religious communities. One of the key moments of his visit will be a courtesy meeting with the President of the Republic at the Presidential Palace, reflecting the diplomatic dimension of his journey. He is also expected to meet members of the diplomatic corps and cultural figures, reinforcing dialogue between the Church and wider society.

During his stay, Pope Leo XIV will visit important social and educational institutions, including the Jean Pierre Olie Psychiatric Hospital and the León XIV Campus of the National University. These visits are intended to highlight themes of healthcare, education and human dignity, which have remained central throughout his African tour. He is also scheduled to meet local bishops in a private audience to discuss pastoral priorities and the role of the Church in the region.

The programme further includes travel to Mongomo and Bata, where the Pope will take part in religious ceremonies and community meetings. In Mongomo, he will celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and visit a technology school associated with the Church. In Bata, he is expected to visit a local prison, pray at a memorial dedicated to victims of a past explosion, and meet young people and families in a large public gathering, reflecting his emphasis on outreach to all sections of society.

The Apostolic Journey will conclude on Thursday, 23 April, with a final Mass at Malabo Stadium followed by a farewell ceremony at the airport. Pope Leo XIV is expected to return to Rome later that day, bringing to a close a significant international visit that has combined religious, humanitarian and diplomatic engagements across four African nations.
