A commemorative musical event will take place in Malta to mark the first anniversary of the death of Pope Francis. The concert, scheduled for 24 April at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St Paul in Mdina, will feature a two-hour oratorio titled “Francesco: Shepherd of Mercy,” reflecting on the life and legacy of the late pontiff.

The event has been organised by the Malta Police Force in collaboration with the Maltese Embassy to the Holy See, highlighting the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between Malta and the Vatican. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to Id-Dar tal-Providenza, a Church-run care home that supports people in need, reinforcing the charitable focus of the initiative.

The oratorio has been composed by Maestro Anthony Cassar, conductor of the Malta Police Force Orchestra, with a libretto written by Malta’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Frank Zammit. The production aims to present a musical reflection on Pope Francis’ pontificate, emphasizing themes of mercy, compassion, and service to the vulnerable.

The event is expected to bring together a wide range of religious, civil, and diplomatic figures. Among those attending will be Malta’s Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà, Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna, and representatives of the Apostolic Nunciature. Their presence underscores the significance of Pope Francis’ legacy within both the Church and Maltese society.

Beyond its commemorative purpose, the concert also reflects the continued cultural impact of Pope Francis’ leadership, particularly his emphasis on social justice and care for marginalized communities. Through music and collective remembrance, the event aims to celebrate his influence while supporting ongoing charitable work in his memory.
