Pope Leo XIV has paid heartfelt tribute to Cardinal Dominik Duka, O.P., the Archbishop Emeritus of Prague, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82. In a telegram of condolences sent to Archbishop Jan Graubner, the current Archbishop of Prague, the Pope described Cardinal Duka as a man of deep faith, courage, and steadfast devotion to Christ, particularly during the years of religious persecution in his homeland.

“I remember with admiration his courage during the time of persecution, when, deprived of his freedom, he did not falter in his adherence to Christ and to the Church,” Pope Leo wrote. The message recalled the late cardinal’s strength and witness during the Communist era, when he was imprisoned for his faith and continued to minister quietly among fellow inmates and believers.

Cardinal Duka, a member of the Dominican Order, was created a cardinal in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Throughout his ministry, he became one of the most influential voices for religious freedom and reconciliation in Central Europe. His leadership extended beyond the Czech Republic, as he became known for fostering dialogue between faith and society in an increasingly secular environment.

In his message, Pope Leo expressed his spiritual closeness to the Church in the Czech Republic, the Dominican community, and all those who had worked alongside Cardinal Duka. He described him as “a shepherd forged in faith and a fearless proclaimer of the Gospel,” someone whose life embodied courage, humility, and compassion for the people he served.

“With a father’s heart,” the Pope said, “he guided the People of God, promoting reconciliation, religious freedom, and dialogue between faith and society.” The Pope noted that Cardinal Duka’s legacy continues to inspire those who seek to live out their faith in truth and love.

The Pope also reflected on the cardinal’s episcopal motto, In Spiritu Veritatis “In the Spirit of Truth,” saying it captured the essence of his vocation as a Dominican and a pastor. His ministry, the Pope wrote, was “rooted in the Dominican charism of truth and charity” and stood as a testament to faithful service in difficult times.

As the Czech Church prepares to honor Cardinal Duka’s memory, Pope Leo extended his blessing to all those mourning his death and participating in the funeral rites. He commended “the soul of this good and generous servant” to God’s mercy and prayed that he might be welcomed “into the joy of His kingdom.”

Cardinal Duka’s passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the life of the Czech Church, one shaped by resilience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel. His witness, both in times of hardship and renewal, will remain a guiding example for future generations of clergy and faithful alike.
