Swiss Guard launches internal review after reported dispute at Vatican gate
The Pontifical Swiss Guard has begun an internal investigation following reports of an altercation at one of the entrances to Vatican City that allegedly involved behavior perceived as having antisemitic overtones. The Holy See Press Office confirmed that the matter is being reviewed to determine the facts and ensure full compliance with the Vatican’s standards of conduct.
Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, said the incident appeared to stem from a disagreement over a photograph displayed at a security post near one of the Vatican gates. According to initial accounts shared with journalists, two Jewish women visiting the site were reportedly subjected to inappropriate remarks by a member of the Swiss Guard. The remarks were interpreted by witnesses as carrying antisemitic connotations, prompting swift action from Vatican officials.
Bruni emphasized that the internal review would be handled according to established protocols, including strict confidentiality and impartiality. “The Vatican takes such reports very seriously,” he said, adding that the process would respect both the dignity of those involved and the values of justice that guide the Holy See’s institutions.
In a separate statement, the Swiss Guard reaffirmed its commitment to upholding its centuries old reputation for discipline, respect, and service to the papacy. “The Pontifical Swiss Guard reiterates its dedication to ensuring that its mission is always carried out with respect for the dignity of every person, as well as the principles of equality and non discrimination,” the statement read.
The Swiss Guard, one of the Vatican’s most recognizable institutions, is responsible for protecting the Pope and maintaining security within the city state. Known for its ceremonial uniforms and long history dating back to the sixteenth century, the Guard also operates as a professional security corps. Incidents involving misconduct are rare, making this investigation particularly noteworthy.
Vatican officials have not released the name of the guard involved or provided further details about possible disciplinary actions. Church sources suggest the inquiry will assess both the circumstances of the exchange and any evidence of bias or misconduct.
The Holy See has in recent years placed increased emphasis on training programs focused on cultural awareness, ethics, and interreligious respect for all personnel serving within Vatican departments. The current review is expected to reinforce that commitment.
As the investigation proceeds, Church observers say the Vatican’s transparent handling of the matter will be important for maintaining public trust and demonstrating its dedication to equality and inclusion within one of its oldest and most respected institutions.
