Pope Francis Institute Launched in Canada to Carry Forward Legacy of Dialogue and Social Justice
The global legacy of the late Pope Francis has taken a new institutional form in Canada with the launch of the Pope Francis Institute at St. Jerome’s University in Waterloo, Ontario. Announced on April 21, the initiative marks the first anniversary of the pontiff’s death and represents the world’s first academic centre dedicated specifically to advancing his theological, social and pastoral vision. The institute is being positioned as a long term platform for dialogue, research and formation rooted in the core themes that defined his papacy.
Hosted at St. Jerome’s University, which is federated with the University of Waterloo, the new institute is designed to function as a hub where academic inquiry meets lived Catholic practice. It will focus on areas strongly associated with Pope Francis’ global mission, including engagement across social and cultural differences, care for people on the margins, migration and refugee advocacy, ecological responsibility and responses to digital fragmentation in modern society. These themes reflect a broader attempt to translate papal teaching into practical formation for educators, healthcare professionals and social service workers.
The creation of the institute was already in development prior to the death of Pope Francis in April 2025, but its official launch has taken on added symbolic weight following the anniversary of his passing. University leaders have described the initiative as a continuation of existing efforts within the institution, particularly the Certificate in Catholic Leadership programme. That programme integrates academic study with spiritual development and community service, preparing professionals working in schools, hospitals and social care environments to engage with ethical and pastoral challenges in contemporary society.
At the heart of the institute is an emphasis on encounter, a recurring idea in Pope Francis’ teaching that prioritises human connection over ideological division. The Waterloo based initiative seeks to explore how this principle can be applied within academic settings and broader social contexts. By fostering dialogue between disciplines and communities, the institute aims to create a space where faith and public life interact in constructive and transformative ways, particularly in addressing issues of inequality, displacement and environmental responsibility.
The establishment of the Pope Francis Institute reflects a growing international interest in preserving and extending the intellectual and pastoral legacy of the late pontiff. It also highlights the role of Catholic higher education in shaping responses to global challenges through formation and research. By embedding his vision into an academic structure, St. Jerome’s University is positioning itself as a centre for ongoing reflection on how the Church can respond to modern complexity while remaining grounded in service, solidarity and care for creation.
