More than 4,000 Catholic school teachers across Thailand are preparing for the new academic year through a nationwide formation initiative that reflects a growing emphasis on mission, ethics and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence in education. The programme, organised by the Catholic Education Council of Thailand, is designed to strengthen both the spiritual identity and professional capacity of educators as they respond to rapidly changing classroom realities and the evolving needs of students in a digital age.

The upcoming seminar, scheduled for May 13 and delivered online, will bring together teachers from Catholic schools across the country for a full day of formation. The programme combines spiritual reflection, pedagogical training and ethical discussion, highlighting the Church’s commitment to holistic education. Organisers have stressed that the initiative is not only about academic preparation but also about renewing the deeper vocation of teaching as a mission rooted in service, care and human development.

At the centre of the formation effort is the desire to help educators rediscover their identity as witnesses within the classroom. Teachers are being encouraged to see their role as forming not only minds but also character, guiding students through both intellectual growth and moral development. This vision aligns closely with the long standing approach of Catholic education in Thailand, where schools emphasise discipline, community life and values based learning as essential elements of student formation.

According to Father Paul Eakarat Homprathum, secretary general of the Catholic Education Council of Thailand, the strong participation reflects a shared awareness among educators of the challenges and opportunities facing modern schooling. He noted that beginning a new academic year requires both spiritual renewal and professional readiness, especially as teachers are increasingly required to navigate complex issues such as technology use in classrooms, student wellbeing and ethical decision making in education systems shaped by rapid global change.

One of the key themes of this year’s formation is the role of artificial intelligence in education, which is reshaping how students learn and how teachers deliver content. While AI offers new tools for personalised learning and efficiency, Church educators are also being urged to consider its ethical implications and its impact on human relationships in the classroom. The seminar aims to equip teachers with frameworks to integrate technology responsibly while maintaining a strong focus on human dignity, critical thinking and moral formation.

The initiative reflects a broader effort within Catholic education in Thailand to balance innovation with tradition. As schools prepare for the new academic year in mid May, educators are being called to renew their sense of mission as guides who “plant and nurture seeds” that shape the future lives of their students. This metaphor underscores the long term vision of Catholic schooling, where education is seen not only as preparation for employment but as a lifelong process of personal and spiritual development rooted in values that endure beyond the classroom.
