Pope Leo XIV has announced the theme for World Mission Day 2026 as One in Christ, United in Mission, linking the Church’s evangelizing task to spiritual communion and reconciliation within Christian communities. The message was released on January 25, marking the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, and coincides with the centenary of World Mission Day, first established in 1926. The Pope emphasized that missionary renewal does not begin with strategy or structure but with unity rooted in communion with Christ. He warned that internal divisions, mistrust, and polarization weaken the Church’s credibility and obscure its witness in the world. According to the message, unity among believers is not an abstract ideal but a concrete condition for the Gospel to be proclaimed with authenticity and coherence across diverse cultural and social contexts.

Reflecting on the missionary path following the Jubilee year, Pope Leo underlined that evangelization requires reconciled communities and a shared willingness to cooperate with trust and generosity. He described Christian life as fundamentally relational, grounded in union with Christ rather than adherence to ideas or ethical systems alone. This communion, he wrote, is the source of all missionary fruitfulness. The Pope also situated the theme within the broader ecumenical horizon, encouraging renewed engagement with other Christian traditions. He pointed to the upcoming joint commemoration of the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea as an opportunity to deepen dialogue and shared witness, noting that unity among Christians strengthens the Church’s capacity to speak credibly to a fragmented world.

The Pope stressed that unity is not an end in itself but is ordered toward mission. He wrote that the proclamation of the Gospel gains strength through the witness of reconciled and fraternal communities, where lived communion becomes visible to others. Recalling the words of Blessed Paolo Manna and the founding vision of the Pontifical Missionary Union, Pope Leo reaffirmed that mission belongs to the entire Church and that no baptized person is exempt from responsibility for evangelization. He expressed gratitude for the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies, recalling his own pastoral experience with them during his ministry in Peru and highlighting their role in sustaining global networks of prayer, charity, and missionary cooperation.

Concluding his message, Pope Leo described mission as an expression of God’s faithful love revealed in Jesus Christ. He thanked missionaries serving beyond their homelands and appealed for new missionary vocations, noting the continued need for courageous witnesses of the Gospel. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by missionaries and encouraged believers to support them through prayer and solidarity. The message ended with a prayer asking that Christians be made one in Christ and strengthened for witness, entrusting the Church’s missionary work to Mary, Queen of Missions. World Mission Day 2026 will be observed on October 18, continuing a tradition that links global evangelization with shared responsibility and spiritual communion.
