The Catholic Church in Laos has marked a significant moment of spiritual renewal with the ordination of two new priests, an event described by Church leaders as a profound gift that brings hope to the country’s small but growing Catholic community. The ordinations took place at St Louis Church in Thakhek during a large celebration attended by more than one thousand two hundred faithful, including participants from neighboring countries such as Thailand and the Philippines. The occasion highlighted both the unity of the regional Catholic community and the importance of vocational growth in a country where clergy numbers remain very limited.

The newly ordained priests, Father Peter Gnantina Phiakeo and Father Philip Nouy Kamhou, belong to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Their ordination was conducted by Msgr Jean Marie Vianney Prida Inthirath, Apostolic Vicar of Savannakhet, in a ceremony that combined traditional liturgical elements with cultural expressions including music, prayer, and local dance. Church leaders described the event as a deeply joyful celebration that reflected the strong faith of the local Catholic population despite geographical and structural challenges faced by the Church in Laos.

According to Church officials, the Catholic community in Laos consists of approximately fifty three thousand faithful spread across remote and mountainous regions, with only around twenty priests serving across four apostolic vicariates. The absence of foreign missionaries, due to government restrictions, places additional responsibility on local clergy to meet pastoral needs. In this context, the ordination of new priests is seen as particularly significant, as it strengthens the Church’s ability to provide spiritual guidance and support to scattered communities in rural areas.

Church leaders present at the ceremony emphasized the importance of the occasion for the future of Catholic life in Laos. Msgr Anthony Adoun Hongsaphong described the event as a moment of profound gratitude and spiritual encouragement, noting the strong participation of young people, religious sisters, and clergy from across the region. The celebration also included a prayer vigil held the previous evening, during which the faithful gathered in adoration and prayer, reflecting a deep sense of devotion and collective hope for the continued growth of the Church.

Regional Church representatives also expressed solidarity with the Laotian Catholic community, highlighting its resilience and commitment despite limitations. Msgr Enrique Figaredo, President of the Laotian Cambodian Episcopal Conference, noted that the Church in Laos continues to move forward with faith and perseverance, supported by a strong sense of community and trust in divine providence. He emphasized that the arrival of new priests represents not only an increase in clergy but also a renewal of hope and confidence for the future of the Church in the region.
