Pope Leo XIV Prays at Bata Memorial for Victims of 2021 Military Base Explosions
During his Apostolic Journey to Equatorial Guinea, Pope Leo XIV made a solemn visit to the city of Bata to honour the victims of the 7 March 2021 military base explosions that claimed more than one hundred lives. The visit formed part of a broader pastoral programme focused on reconciliation, remembrance, and support for communities affected by tragedy.
At the memorial site dedicated to the victims, the Pope paused in silent prayer in front of a monument listing the names of those who died in the blasts. Despite heavy rain, he stepped out of his vehicle and stood quietly before the memorial structure, reflecting on the impact of the disaster and offering prayers for the deceased and their families. A wreath of white roses was placed at the base of the monument as a symbol of mourning and respect.

Earlier in the day, Pope Leo XIV also visited a local prison in Bata, where he met inmates and prison authorities. During his interaction, he delivered words of consolation and emphasised themes of dignity, forgiveness, and inclusion. His remarks reflected a consistent message throughout his journey, focusing on compassion and spiritual support for those often marginalised by society.
The visit to both the prison and the memorial highlighted the Pope’s emphasis on reaching communities affected by suffering and hardship.
