Pope Leo XIV’s Message of Hope Reaches Gaza Parish as Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
In the midst of ongoing conflict in Gaza, a message of spiritual solidarity from Pope Leo XIV has reached the Holy Family Catholic Church, offering renewed encouragement to a community living under extreme hardship. Father Gabriel Romanelli, the parish priest in Gaza, shared that the Pope’s words have become a vital source of hope for both clergy and civilians who continue to endure shortages of basic necessities and the constant threat of violence. According to the priest, the Holy Father’s message focused on peace for both Palestine and Israel, as well as prayers for conversion, grace, and reconciliation across the region.
Father Romanelli explained that the Pope sent a written message on 4 May, expressing his closeness to the people of Gaza and his concern over the worsening humanitarian situation. The parish priest highlighted that the communication was not symbolic alone but deeply pastoral, emphasizing the Church’s ongoing prayer for an end to the war and for relief for those suffering within the territory. He noted that even the delivery of humanitarian aid remains extremely difficult, adding to the daily suffering experienced by families sheltering in the parish and surrounding areas. Despite these conditions, he said the Pope continues to remind them that they are not forgotten by the global Church.
The Holy Family Catholic Church, one of the few remaining active Christian communities in Gaza, has become a refuge for displaced civilians seeking safety and basic support. Father Romanelli described the situation as still highly fragile, even with reduced large scale bombardments compared to earlier phases of the conflict. He noted that while there have been moments of relative calm, violence has not completely ceased and casualties continue to be reported. According to his account, more than 800 people have died since the latest phase of the crisis, underscoring the ongoing severity of the humanitarian emergency.
Beyond the immediate dangers of conflict, the parish continues to face severe shortages of water, electricity, and essential supplies. These conditions have made daily survival increasingly difficult for residents and those sheltering within church facilities. Father Romanelli emphasized that the lack of infrastructure and consistent humanitarian access remains one of the most urgent challenges. In this context, he said that the Pope’s encouragement plays an important role in sustaining morale, reminding the community that their suffering is seen and shared in prayer by believers around the world.
The priest further reflected that Pope Leo XIV’s consistent messages of hope and peace help reinforce the spiritual resilience of the local Church. He explained that the Pope’s words encourage the faithful not to lose heart and to continue serving others despite the surrounding hardship.
